  • Where you were at that time

  • Why you used a map

And explain how you felt about the experience

_______

A vivid memory that pops into my mind when thinking about maps is my recent solo backpacking trip through the ancient town of Hoi An. I was on a mission to find the popular Pagoda Bridge with Japanese architectural features such as its vermilion paint and tiled roof. While most tourists were glued to  their smartphones, I stuck to  my paper map instead.

Navigating with Google Maps in this labyrinth of  alleyways  wasn't the best option. Yet, my paper map unfolded like a treasure map, with its faded lines and Vietnamese characters holding the key to my adventure. Despite my earnest attempts  at map-reading, the locals found amusement in my efforts and often stopped to offer straightforward directions in a mix of verbal  and body language.

Traversing  through the beauty of the ancient path following the map and guidance from locals, I came across a faded  symbol I couldn't decipher . It turned out to be a hidden alley leading to an ancient house with bougainvilleas  and koi ponds. At that moment, the map turned into a passport, unlocking the town’s hidden gems

Having explored through the site, I decided it was time to reach the final destination -  the Pagoda Bridge. The ornate  carvings bathed in the light of sunset and graceful hanging lanterns swayed gently in summer breezes. That was truly a testament  to the town’s rich history and captivating  beauty.

Looking back, that day in Hoi An taught me more than just how to read a map. I learned about the beauty of  serendipity  and the joy of getting lost to find myself. The map is a reminder that sometimes the best journeys are ones where we let go of the digital gadgets .
