IELTS Speaking Sample Part 2 - A Foreigner Who Speaks Your Language Well

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Describe a foreigner you know who speaks Vietnamese well

You should say:

  • Who this person is

  • Where he / she is from

  • How he / she learns Vietnamese

And explain why he / she can speak Vietnamese well

_______

Well, I’d like to tell you about my close friend from France who has become incredibly fluent in Vietnamese after years of learning and practice.

So, my friend's journey into Vietnamese began when he decided to move to Vietnam for work. At first, as you can tell, he didn't know a single word of the language, which made his daily life quite challenging. However, his determination to fit in with the local culture and communicate effectively with Vietnamese colleagues and friends eventually pushed him to learn the language.

He started things off by signing up for formal Vietnamese classes, which he then attended regularly and practiced diligently at home. But what really made a difference was how he fully immersed himself in the local scene and actively looked for chances to converse with native speakers. That means whether it was ordering food or haggling at the bustling markets, he always tried to use Vietnamese at every opportunity .

Besides my friend’s dedication to learning Vietnamese, what also sets him apart is his never-give-up attitude. You know, Vietnamese can be a tough nut to crack for foreigners, especially with all the tones and intonation , but he never lost his cool . He accepted the fact that he would make mistakes sometimes and turned those into learning moments.

To conclude, I think my friend’s journey from France to a Vietnamese fluent speaker is all about his determination, immersion into local life, and commitment to improving his language skills. He's a truly inspiring example of how hard work and genuine interest can lead to fluency in a foreign language.
