Well, I don’t really like learning this subject. The thing is there are a lot of dates and events to remember and, you know, back in high school, history was a nightmare to me as everything just went over my head and I often forgot them during exams.
Vocabulary
go over sb’s head: khó hiểu, khó vào đầu
the thing is: vấn đề ở chỗ là…
As I said, I don’t have a good memory, so I always find it hard to recollect some historical events. But the one that springs to mind right now is the Independence Day of Vietnam. This is a very special day for many Vietnamese as it marks the birth of our country when Uncle Ho delivered the Declaration of Independence to the world.
Vocabulary
recollect (v) = recall (v): nhớ lại
the one that springs to mind (v)= the one that pops into one’s mind: điều xuất hiện trong đầu
mark (v): đánh dấu
deliver the Declaration of Independence (v): đọc bản Tuyên Ngôn Độc Lập
Although I find it hard to remember facts and figures, I do think that history is extremely important. By this I mean we really need to have an insight into our past in order to appreciate what we have today and get more motivated to strive for a better future.
Vocabulary
facts and figures: số liệu
by this I mean: ý của tui là
have an insight into something: hiểu biết thêm về cái gì đó
strive (v) + for: cố gắng / phấn đấu vì điều gì đó
