IELTS Speaking Sample Part 2 - Unusual Meal

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Describe an unusual meal you had.

You should say:

  • When you had it

  • Where you had it

  • Whom you had it with

And explain why it was unusual.

So, if I remember correctly, I once had an unusual meal about 3 years ago, when I was traveling in Thailand with my nearest and dearest and we were staying in a small village in the north of the country.

One day, we decided to go out for dinner, and we found a small roadside eatery that looked quite interesting. Then, as soon as we went inside, we were absolutely taken aback by the menu that was full of special dishes. There were things like snake meat, frog legs, and even insects. All these foods really stimulated our curiosity , you know, so we agreed to order something entirely different at that time, a plate of fried crickets.

When the food arrived, we were a little bit hesitant to try it, but we took a deep breath and just dug in . To our surprise, the crickets were actually quite tasty! They had a crunchy texture and a slightly nutty flavor . We ended up eating the whole plate, and we even ordered another one!

I think the meal was unusual for a few reasons. First, the dishes were a far cry from what I'm used to eating. I've never had snake meat, frog legs, or insects before, so it was a real adventure. Second, the restaurant was very small and intimate . It was clear that the owner was passionate about cooking, and he took great care in preparing the food. Finally, the meal was a great way to experience the local culture since I got to try some traditional Thai dishes and learned a lot about the country's diverse cuisine .

Overall, it was a really unique and memorable meal. I'm very glad that I had the opportunity to try it, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is searching for a new and exciting dining experience.
